Accountability & Ownership
These two words represent our perspectives and approaches to handling matters.
"Accountability" means being fully responsible for something, and "Ownership" implies having complete ownership over the things we are doing.
Under the premise of achieving a task, we can decide how to complete it. We always have choices and we are fully responsible for the outcomes we produce.
The opposite of this concept includes:
- Doing just enough to get by
- Doing things reluctantly
- Using external factors as excuses for poor performance
When Accountability and Ownership are seen as a way of working, the considerations are not just about whether we like doing the task, have interest in it, or are passionate about it.
Instead, it's about Commitment and Willingness.
The former is about whether we want to do the task; if not, or if it's obligatory, or if it involves aspects we dislike, we might only meet the minimum standards. The latter thinks about how to overcome challenges and achieve it, taking full responsibility for the results, even if the process includes the aspects we don't like.
It's not about not pursuing passions or not taking advantages of our strengths, but about embracing the hard parts whether we like it or not. If we believe the thing is worth doing in the long run, changing the motivation from "I do it because I like to" to "I do it because I am willing to" becomes crucial.
